Make a MASK with FABRIC TIES: ussofts.info/hd/video/xoyYmbiXsWy5Xmk
NOTE: THIS MASK WILL NOT PREVENT YOU FROM CONTRACTING A RESPIRATORY ILLNESS!
Please visit CDC here on the proper use of homemade masks here:
www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/ppe-strategy/face-masks.html
SUPPLIES:
2 pieces 100% cotton fabric 6" x 9"
1 piece cotton flannel or 100% Cotton Fabric 6" x 9"
2 elastic strips: 1/8" x 6” women, 7” men, 5” children
Kids size: make fabric 5”x7”, and elastic 5” long.
OUT OF ELASTIC? Use ribbon or fabric ties 18”-20” in length.
See my video on how to make a mask with fabric ties here: ussofts.info/hd/video/xoyYmbiXsWy5Xmk
OPTIONAL: To make the nose are a fit better you can sew a wire ribbon, pipe cleaner, or baggie tie to the lining piece before sewing all three layers together. :)
*** Masks are re-usable, but must be sanitized before/after each use! ***
* Use tightly woven cotton fabric, or hospital grade material.
* Keep in mind men and women will be wearing the masks when choosing fabric for mask that will be donated.
* Contact local health facilities to see if they are in need of donations.

Currently, the supply of surgical masks is at a critical all-time low throughout the entire nation. As a community of sewists, this is a great way we can band together and make a huge difference in this time of need!
In addition to helping medical staff during critical shortages, these masks can be used at home as well. While wearing homemade face masks will not prevent against catching a respiratory illness, they can help reduce the spread of large particles when someone sneezes or coughs.

Really great video!! Also I liked how you used 2 different fabrics. This way there is a clear front and back. So when they take it off they know which side should face their mouth as opposed to having to guess because it was the same fabric

My best friend from high school shared this with me this morning, obviously putting me to the challenge. Fortunately, Monterey County, CA, does not have many cases of the virus; but, I'll check with our local hospital, nonetheless. Otherwise I'll contact Red Cross and find out where the needs are. Thank you and God bless.

Instead of adding a headband with buttons to prevent ear injury, why not just extend mask's existing bands by tying an elastic band to allow it go all the way around the back of the head?

A neighbor who has limited days to live due to cancer gave me her nice Elna sewing machine that’s from the 1960s and runs very well. (It’s actually metal and has many metal bobbins!) She also gave me quite a bit material pieces (hard to explain but perfect sizes to make these masks). I’ve never sewn before and what a wonderful time to learn how to make these masks. The first person I’m going to give my first successful mask to is the neighbor who gave me her sewing machine and her friend (another neighbor) who is taking care of her. Nice tutorial. Thanks!

Amateur question. What's your advice on the best way of actually cutting the material? Maybe I'm a bit hard on myself but it took a couple hours to cut some decent rectangles with conventional scissors, and yes they were sharp.

I'm at the point where you see the ends to hold the "creases" together and my needle broke twice. I attempted with an universal needle and then tried a leather needle and both times they broke. I even adjusted the tension. Please help. I made 20 that need to be finished. Tysvm.

We homemade several masks. Kind of different from yours the inner layer, facing nose side, you can cut it open. So you can insert one dried wipe to filter out virus thing.

Flannel might get hot and if the user sweats on the flannel, it creates a medium for bacteria. I am using non woven interfacing!

Go for it Bro! I'm right behind you but at 64. I taught myself how to sew and that has come in very handy because my wife, although she knows how, won't. Plus, I am a Civil War reenactor and must sew many of my own uniforms, as many are from regiments that didn't wear standard sutler available styles. Good luck; and, thanks.

I do like to drop them off laundered, but I know most places are sanitizing them before letting their employees wear them just to be safe. You can ask wherever you're planning to donate what they're process is.

So I made some of these and then was told that they wont keep viruses out unless some kind of filter is inserted in between the layers (i.e. a piece of a hepa vacuum filter). Does anyone know anything about this? Are hospitals using them even without a filter sewed in them?

    • Erica Arndt
      Erica Arndt

They will not prevent you from catching a respiratory virus. Hospitals are using them over the top of their N95 masks to help them last longer, I give all of that info in the video itself and also in the description box below the video. Click 'show more' :)
